Our meetings are held at the Trinity Catholic High School, (Lower Site Hall), Sydney Road, Woodford Green. The current winter programme is shown overleaf.

Over the summer months visits are arranged to places of historic interest both locally and further afield. Details are given in the spring newsletter.

Woodford Historical Society

History

We have come a long way since the first meeting at the Wilfred Lawson Temperance Hotel in March 1932, when the title of the very first talk was simply ‘Woodford’. In 2012 we celebrated our 80th anniversary. Over the years since its formation the society has undergone a number of name changes until in 1983 the present name was decided upon. The committee is always pleased to know of any members in the process of undertaking research into the many aspects of Woodford and its environs.

Aims

The society aims to stimulate interest in the history of Woodford and its locality. It encourages the preservation of items of local historical value, organises lectures, outings, exhibitions and supports local archaeological work in the district. The scope of the society is as wide as the interest of its members and we welcome suggestions for new speakers and topics. Our aim is to provide a friendly atmosphere with interesting subjects. We welcome visitors, but a donation of £3.00 is requested.

Publications

A newsletter is issued to members twice a year, with details of meetings and outings, news from the committee and short articles from members about specific buildings, people or other topics with a Woodford connection. Articles for inclusion are always welcomed. Please contact John Lovell (Editor) with any contributions:

Tel: 020 8505 3640

or e-mail woodfordhistoricalsociety@hotmail.co.uk

The society also intends to publish occasional ‘Transactions’, containing the results of original research which are thought to be worthwhile recording for posterity and are of interest to our members.
